Last Day for Track Sign Up

Quick update on Robina Baker's Black Gold Division Track and Field team.

At present we have in excess of 85 students from kindergarten through grade four coming out to the weekly practices.  If any students are still wanting to sign up and be placed on a team, the last official day to join up is Wednesday, May 6th.

A Heads Up...

A quick heads up that athlete sign up for the Black Gold Division Track and Field meet will be held on Monday, April 27th for all students in grades one through four during the noon hour recess.

Practices will be held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the noon hour recess - students who sign up for the team are expected to consistently attend the track practices.  Dates of all practices will posted on the Robina Baker school calendar. Everyone coming out will "make the team" so long as they are attending practices regularly - as this allows us to effectively set the teams.

The meet will once again be held at Riverview Middle School in June...and all parents are of course welcome to come out and cheer on the Robina Baker team!

Attention Student Athletes!

Just a quick heads up to parents that all student athletes who participated in girls floor hockey (both teams), boys floor hockey (Viking Cup team and Golden Running Shoe Series teams) and all Klondike Relay athletes will all be receiving recognition and certificates at this Friday's (April 17, 2015) weekly assembly!  Grab your cameras and come and share in the excitement!

Viking Cup Champions!

Congratulations to the boys grade 3-4 floor hockey team on their gold medal Viking Cup victory. They worked as a team and hustled like no one's business going undefeated in four straight games and allowing a tournament low two goals against!!  Defence wins championships apparently!!

Rabbit Hill Adventures - Part Deux!

As part of the school's PE program the students get to experience the thrill of downhill skiing and snowboarding.  St. Patrick's Day marked our school's second ski trip this month - and a giant pat on the back for a great day of skiing/snowboarding at Rabbit Hill Snow Resort goes out to both Mrs. Fleming's and Mrs. Spreen's grade four classes!

Both classes had an amazing day and the marked improvement in the students' abilities was fantastic with all sections of the hill being filled with energetic RBES students showing off their talents.  Super work everyone on testing your skills and remembering to stay in control and within your abilities!

Rabbit Hill Adventures - Part One!

So round one of the school's Rabbit Hill ski and snowboard education sessions is in the books (finally) and judging from the huge smiles and tired legs it was a great experience for all of our grade four students! From mastering the art of falling (way to hang in there TJ) to conquering the fear of heights and taking the chair lift (Good job Kathryn) it was a memorable day of firsts...cannot wait for the adventures of our next ski and snowboard trip!

Our next trip to Rabbit Hill is scheduled for Tuesday, March 17th so grade four parents be sure to submit your permission forms and payment well in advance if you haven't already done so yet via Powerschool.

Girls Floor Hockey - Volunteers Needed

The game schedule is set, the boards are up, and the concession food is ready...now we just need a few volunteers!  A tournament such as this takes the work of many and unfortunately we are short a few of the usual "suspects" who have helped in previous years so we have a few jobs that need filling as soon as possible.

The majority of the "jobs" are covered but we still need some more bodies to help run the score clock (instruction sheet will be readily available to help with button pushing)and help out with the reffing of games.

If anyone is able to help please send a note in to the school with your son or daughter as soon as possible and we will get you slotted into the volunteer schedule.  Thank you!

Girls Floor Hockey Update...

The girls have been practicing now for a little over a week and have been making solid progress!  There is no doubt our crew of ladies will represent the school well at the upcoming RBES Girls All Stars Tournament being held on March 7th here at Robina Baker Elementary.  There will be a total of twelve teams from throughout the Black Gold School division competing for floor hockey glory.

Players will be separated into their two respective teams this week (gold or blue) and will be bringing home their respective tournament game schedule shortly.  If when reviewing the game schedule your daughter is unable to participate in any or all of the games please let Mr. Henderson know as soon as possible so that player adjustments can be made.  Given that we have the luxury of having two teams entered it is possible for us to shift players between the squads if need be and if we have prior notice.

Here is the remaining February practice schedule.  The remaining week of March schedule will be out on Friday.

Thank you.

Skip to my Lou my Darlings...

No bad luck for us...Friday the 13th brought nothing but smiles and laughter as the students and staff (and even a few parents) of Robina Baker took part once again in the the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation's "Jump Rope for Heart" day!

With 16 different skipping centers the students were really able to test their jumping skills and see if they could make the "jump" from the basic moves to the "sophisticated skippers".

It was a great day and the students all managed to get some exercise while helping out a very worthwhile cause!

Rabbit Hill Ski Trip Rescheduled

Just a quick update on today's Rabbit Hill Ski/Snowboard field trip.  With today's grade four field trip it was temporarily postponed due to less than favorable weather conditions.  Given today's temperatures in combination with the wind chill the decision was made to reschedule the trip to a more favorable date when the students could more fully enjoy the experience rather than huddle inside the chalet.

The good news is that the trip has already been rescheduled!!  The new rescheduled date for the grade four Rabbit Hill field trip is MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9th  (temperatures that day are forecast at minus one - so greatly improved).

** As we had to change the date of the field trip we are asking parents to go online and complete a new permission form for the alternate skiing date.  The new permission form is posted online in the Powerschool Parent portal and can be completed immediately.**

Any and all payments made previously will not change and will simply rollover to the new date.

Thank you.

A Mixed Bag of PE Info...

So another week of skating has wrapped up - and big thank you goes out to the adventurous Merriott Youth Athletic Foundation coaches for all their assistance in bringing out the hidden ringette player in all of us!  It was great fun and we look forward to our next round with the rings.  A second thank you goes out to Kirk Wagner for sharing his very cool skating videos, definitely captured some of the fun the kids had throughout the week!

In the next couple weeks the world of phys.ed gets busy once again with classes going downhill skiing, performing yoga, taking part in the intramural program, starting practices in floor hockey and then taking the ice once more for our final round of skating.

1. Grade Four Rabbit Hill Ski trip - students are asked to be at the school by 8:20 ready to head out to the hill.  Those students bringing their own equipment are asked to set it at the front of the school where Mr. Henderson will load it up for them.  Students are reminded to bring their own lunches and to of course dress appropriately for the activity, ie. gloves, ski pants, winter jacket

2. Yoga - teacher Dawn will be back at the school on Wednesday, February 4th working with the students on their mental wellness and yoga fitness.

3. Lunch Time Intramural Program - For the month of February the grade 3 classes will be taking part in the noon hour lunch intramural program.  Students will be playing indoor soccer during the lunch hour on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Sign up sheets will be circulated on Monday (2) with the first games beginning the following week (Monday, 9).  Players are reminded to only sign up if they are going to attend consistently otherwise it makes it difficult for the remaining players on their team.

4.  Grade 3 & 4 GIRLS Floor Hockey - so the girl's floor hockey season is set to kick off.  Sign up sheets have been circulated to all the grade 3 and 4 classrooms and all players are asked to attend our first player's meeting during the AM recess on Tuesday (Feb, 3).  The girls will be practicing 3 times a week after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  A practice schedule and consent form will be handed out to all interested players at the Tuesday meeting.  The girl's floor hockey season wraps up in early March with the annual division wide Shooting Stars Girls Floor Hockey tournament held at RBES.

RBES Skating - Week 2

Our second week of skating begins Monday, January 26th!
The schedule is available on our website at http://www.rbes.ca/calendar.html

The required permission form is now available to all parents and must be completed online and submitted  by Friday, January  23 - this permission form will also cover our skating in February.

To complete the permission form go to:  https://powerschool.blackgold.ca/public/

For help with completing the permission form, go to: http://www.rbes.ca/permission-forms.html

We need volunteer help!
Every class requires 3 volunteers to help supervise and tie skates.  All volunteers are also welcome to skate with the class.  If you can help, please contact your child’s teacher.

In this activity, as with any other physical activity, there is an element of risk.  Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity in Alberta Schools outlines that in order to provide the safest possible conditions in which to skate, it is important to know:

1. CSA approved hockey helmets provide the best possible protection and no children will be allowed on the ice surface without a helmet.
2. Parents should have skates checked for proper fit before children go skating.
3. Children should have mitts or gloves, coats and waterproof pants or ski pants.
4. Skates need to be transported in a cloth bag for the protection of the child as well as his/her classmates.
5. There may be some skates available in our “extra” skate box.

Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.

Keep the beat!

Let the good times roll, Drumfit has taken over the school and the kids
are loving every minute of it!

"What is Drumfit?" you ask.  Easiest way to answer...
Drumfit is a program that exercises both the body and the brain.

It is a fast paced, non-competitive fitness program that combines music, movement, and of course drumming.
There is only one rule:  Have Fun!  The activity is guaranteed to leave the kids smiling, inspired, and wanting more!

Drum on Robina Baker, drum on!

Lunch Time Intramural Program

Kicking off on Monday, January 12th the lunch time intramural program will resume with students in grade one through four having the opportunity to join a team and participate in a variety of fun sports activities.  The intramural program will alternate between grade levels and the targeted sport will also change monthly.

This month the grades 1 and 2 students will take center stage and will be playing indoor soccer during the lunch hour on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.  Thus far we have six student teams comprised of a mix of various classrooms which will give the kids the chance to play with other students who they may not normally play with.  It should be a lot of fun for everyone!

There is no intramural program on Wednesdays as  Fitness for Fun with the Merriott Youth Athletic coaches will continue every Wednesday in the gym.  This month the fitness for fun class has started exploring the fun and movement of indoor ringette; the first session had over 70 students attend!
